Check image DPI before you print

Learn how to verify pixel dimensions, effective PPI and print size before sending a photo or artwork file to a printer.

Divide the image width in pixels by the intended print width in inches, then repeat for height. The lower result is the effective PPI. A 3600 × 2400 px image printed at 12 × 8 in is 300 PPI in both directions.

Start with pixels, not the DPI label

An image can contain a metadata value such as 72 DPI or 300 DPI, but that number alone does not describe how much detail the file contains. Pixel width and height are the actual inventory of image information. The same 3000 px-wide file can be 10 inches wide at 300 PPI or 20 inches wide at 150 PPI without changing a single pixel.

Changing only the metadata from 72 to 300 does not improve sharpness. It changes the proposed physical size. Resampling can create more pixels, but those new pixels are estimates; it cannot recover detail that the camera, scanner or original artwork never captured.

Calculate effective PPI in both directions

Use pixel width ÷ print width in inches for horizontal PPI and pixel height ÷ print height for vertical PPI. If the artwork and paper have different proportions, one direction can be lower than the other. Use the lower value as the conservative effective resolution.

For example, a 4000 × 3000 px photograph placed in a 16 × 12 in frame is 250 PPI. Place that same file at 24 × 18 in and it becomes about 167 PPI. The file did not change; only the output size did.

Resolution is necessary, but it is not the whole quality check

A technically sufficient PPI value can still produce a weak print when the source is out of focus, over-sharpened or heavily compressed. Zoom in to inspect hair, text, diagonal edges and areas of smooth tone. JPEG blocks, ringing around edges and artificial AI-upscaling texture can remain visible even when the pixel count looks impressive.

  • Inspect the image at approximately the intended output size.
  • Check the final crop, not only the uncropped source file.
  • Keep an untouched original before resizing or compressing.
  • Ask the printer whether they specify a minimum effective PPI.

A reliable preflight workflow

Confirm the final trim dimensions, include bleed separately, inspect the source pixel dimensions, calculate effective PPI, and then review the image visually. Export using the printer's requested color space and file format. For important jobs, print a small proof or a representative crop before committing to the full run.
