Set up bleed without changing trim size
Plan flat and folded artwork, calculate exact bleed dimensions, keep safety separate and check your exported PDF against the supplier template.
Keep the finished trim fixed and extend backgrounds beyond cut edges. For a side-folded 5 × 7 in card, a 10 × 7 in flat spread with 0.125 in outer bleed is 10.25 × 7.25 in, not two separately bled panels joined together.

Start with the finished product
Identify what is being ordered: a flat card, folded card, flyer, booklet or packaging panel. Record the finished trim size and whether the supplier wants individual pages, a flat spread or a dieline. Folded size is not flat artwork size.
Trim is the final cut boundary. Bleed extends backgrounds beyond it. Safety keeps critical content inside it. Use guides for all three, but keep visible guide lines out of production artwork unless requested.
Set safety independently
Use the product's specified inner safety. Neither 3 mm nor 0.125 inch is a universal safe-area rule; 0.125 inch is exactly 3.175 mm. Book gutters, folding clearances and barcode quiet zones are separate requirements.
If a card has 0.125 inch bleed and 0.125 inch inner safety, text starts at least 0.25 inch inward from the outer artwork edge. At 300 PPI that combined offset is 75 pixels. Inner safety alone is 37.5 pixels; round inward conservatively when aligning to a raster grid.
Keep the template's units
Do not substitute 3 mm for 0.125 inch. A supplier may reject unexpected physical dimensions even if the allowance is slightly larger. Maintain separate export settings for production partners with different specifications.

Folds are not extra cut edges
A simple folded sheet has outer cut edges and an internal fold. Do not insert two strips of bleed or an invented gutter between touching panels. A roll-fold brochure may need unequal panels so one can tuck inside. Obtain the folding template instead of assuming equal panels.
Keep important content away from folds by the requested amount. Thick stock, scoring and binding can affect clearance. Make a folded mock-up to confirm the front panel and reverse-side orientation.
Use an explicit document-bleed workflow
In a layout application with separate bleed controls, set the document to trim size and specify bleed separately. Extend backgrounds into that area and include it in the production export. Adobe's references below distinguish bleed from printer's marks and slug information.
If an editor lacks bleed controls, a supplier may accept an oversized canvas with trim guides; confirm this first. A Word margin creates internal spacing, not extra artwork beyond a PDF page. Do not rely on off-page objects surviving export or assume an online editor's toggle produces the required allowance without measuring the output.
Worked example: side-folded 5 × 7 inch card
Assume a simple side-fold card, finished size 5 × 7 inches, equal panels and no supplier-specific hinge adjustment. Flat trim is 10 × 7 inches, with the fold 5 inches from the left trim edge. Confirm these assumptions against the template.
With 0.125 inch bleed on the four outer edges, artwork is (10 + 2 × 0.125) by (7 + 2 × 0.125) = 10.25 × 7.25 inches. At 300 PPI it is 3075 × 2175 px. The fold is 5.125 inches from the left outer artwork edge. There is no additional bleed strip between panels.
Design the outside and inside according to the supplier's front/back instructions. Ask whether to export two spread pages or separate panels. Crop marks indicate cuts, not automatically fold locations; provide fold information only in the requested form.
Convert to pixels once, at the end
For raster artwork, use inches × target PPI. For millimetres, divide the full artwork dimension by 25.4 before multiplying. Keep intermediate values unrounded and round the final pixel canvas upward, matching the Print Bleed Calculator.
A5 with 3 mm bleed is 154 × 216 mm. At 300 PPI: 154 ÷ 25.4 × 300 = 1818.897637… and 216 ÷ 25.4 × 300 = 2551.181102…. Upward rounding gives 1819 × 2552 px. Retain exact physical dimensions for vector PDF layouts.
Check the outer dimensions
A 90 × 50 mm flat card with 3 mm bleed on every edge needs 96 × 56 mm artwork, not 93 × 53 mm. Width and height each include two edges. At 300 PPI the upward-rounded raster size is 1134 × 662 px.
For unequal allowances, add left and right bleed to width, and top and bottom bleed to height. Our simple calculator assumes the same allowance on all four sides; use the supplier template for asymmetric jobs.
Export only the requested marks
Use the requested PDF preset and include document bleed. Some suppliers want crop marks; automated upload workflows may want none. Adding every mark can enlarge the page unexpectedly and does not repair missing backgrounds.
Do not automatically set CropBox equal to TrimBox: that can hide bleed in a viewing or output workflow. Inspect the required boxes and artwork in a prepress application. File Preflight reports MediaBox and CropBox only; it does not certify TrimBox, BleedBox or PDF/X compliance.
Preserve the supplier's dieline conventions
Keep cut paths, folds, glue zones and artwork at their supplied positions and scale. Preserve specified layer names, spot-color names and overprint settings. Do not automatically turn the dieline into ordinary black; the receiving workflow may depend on its technical spot color.
Extend artwork where the specification calls for it. Glue areas, windows, white ink and varnish can need different treatment. A rectangular bleed calculator cannot validate these manufacturing instructions.
Inspect the file that will actually be sent
Open the exported PDF, not just the source. Confirm dimensions, page count and front/back orientation. Inspect the required boxes with a prepress application and visually check that backgrounds extend through the bleed. Measuring boxes alone cannot detect an empty strip.
Correction, September 12, 2026: replaced incorrect folded-card dimensions and safety offsets, corrected A5 pixel rounding and removed fixed software, gutter and dieline assumptions. The table values now have regression checks against the calculator.

Frequently asked questions
Should I add bleed between folded panels?
Not for a continuous simple fold. Bleed belongs beyond outer cut edges. Follow the template for panel widths and fold clearances.
What canvas fits a side-folded 5 × 7 inch card?
Under the equal-panel assumptions above, flat trim is 10 × 7 inches. With 0.125 inch outer bleed it is 10.25 × 7.25 inches, or 3075 × 2175 px at 300 PPI.
Does a bleed setting create missing artwork?
No. It reserves an area. Extend the actual background and verify that the export includes it.
Can File Preflight certify my PDF bleed?
No. The calculator plans dimensions and the PDF checker measures MediaBox and CropBox. Inspect bleed artwork and job-specific requirements separately.
