How KDP paperback covers work

A full-wrap paperback cover contains a back, spine and front on one PDF page. Do not send three independent pages or assume a template for another book has the same geometry. Save the template inputs with your design so the final PDF can be traced to the correct edition.

Treat KDP's current template and requirements as the authority. A local calculation is useful for planning but cannot know every product restriction or validate the artwork. Review the upload in KDP and order a proof when practical.

Finalize the interior first, then enter the final page count and product choices in the official cover calculator. Place the resulting template at its original size on a locked guide layer. Keep artwork on separate layers so you can remove template instructions from the final export.

Before uploading, compare the exported PDF's dimensions with the template, inspect text and edge artwork, and check barcode clearance. Review the actual export rather than relying on the editable document's settings. Keep the source, template and final PDF together.

Spine width formula and KDP calculator

Be careful about units: a printer's coefficient per page is not the same as the thickness of a physical sheet. Our general book-spine calculator uses its displayed assumptions. Do not transfer a coefficient between formulas without checking whether page count is divided by two.

Use the KDP template for the selected product. Do not add a guessed hardcover hinge or binding allowance to a paperback formula, and do not reuse a paper coefficient just because two stocks look similar.

Bleed and safe zone requirements

The outer cover includes bleed; critical text must remain inside the safe areas marked on the template. These regions serve different purposes: bleed protects edge-to-edge backgrounds, while safety keeps important content away from uncertain cutting or folding positions.

A full-width background can continue across back, spine and front. Do not insert a blank stripe at the spine or add separate side-bleed strips between the three panels. Inspect the top and bottom of the spine as well as the four outside corners.

Barcode placement and area rules

Decide whether you will supply an appropriate barcode or let KDP place one. Keep the designated template area free of important artwork and text. Use the official requirements for the barcode you actually intend to supply; do not substitute a decorative barcode image.

Inspect the barcode area after export and in the upload preview. A visually sharp pattern is not proof of a valid, scannable identifier. File Preflight does not validate ISBNs or barcode data.

Downloading and using KDP templates correctly

Place the template without stretching and verify that your design application's units match it. A screenshot of a template is a poor substitute for the downloaded file because its apparent scale may change during import.

Hide the template layer for export, then inspect the PDF for leftover guide text, colored regions or crop instructions. Keep the template in the editable project so later revisions can use the same reference.

For an arithmetic example, assume 200 pages and a printer-specified coefficient of 0.0025 inches per page. The spine is 200 × 0.0025 = 0.5 inches. Two 5.5-inch panels plus that spine produce an 11.5-inch spread. Adding 0.125 inches at each outside edge gives 11.75 × 8.75 inches overall.

The assumption is essential: this is not a claim that every KDP white-paper book uses that coefficient. With a different coefficient, the spine and total width change. Generate the actual template and compare it with the estimate before designing the final cover.

Typography across the spine

KDP currently permits spine text only above 79 pages and specifies at least 0.0625 inches between text and each spine edge. A supposed universal 0.75-inch minimum spine width is not its rule. Check the current requirement and the actual template before adding a title.

Choose type that fits inside the available region and remains readable at physical size. Matte and glossy finishes can affect reflections, but neither provides a universal font-size recipe. Use a proof to judge contrast and readability instead of relying on a zoomed-in screen.

How page-count changes invalidate the cover and what to redo

When pagination changes, generate a new template and compare the spine and overall width. In the worked example, four additional pages at the assumed coefficient add 0.01 inches. That arithmetic illustrates the dependency; the actual change follows your selected product's template.

Update the existing editable design against the new template, checking spine text, adjacent artwork and barcode position. You do not necessarily need to discard all artwork, but you do need a new final export and another review.

Checking uploaded PDF with page size checker

Our PDF page-size checker reports MediaBox and CropBox geometry. It cannot detect missing bleed artwork, unsafe text, low-resolution images inside the PDF, font embedding or KDP compliance. A matching width and height therefore resolves only the geometry question.

Compare the dimensions, then inspect the artwork separately in your layout application and KDP preview. For source images, the image DPI checker can calculate resolution at the intended placement size. It does not replace inspecting every image in the finished PDF.

Common KDP cover rejection reasons and fixes

For a size rejection, compare the template inputs first: paperback versus hardcover, trim size, page count and paper selection. Then check for a scaled template, extra printer marks or export settings that changed the page. Record the old and expected dimensions before altering the file.

For missing bleed, extend real background artwork in the source. For low detail, replace the source image or reduce its placement size; merely increasing a metadata DPI tag or resampling cannot restore original information. For unsafe text, move it within the template's marked region and review the new export.

Why does KDP provide templates instead of fixed spine widths?

The cover depends on the selected product and final page count. Use a fresh template for the book you are publishing, not an estimate copied from a different edition.

What happens if I don't add bleed to my cover?

Artwork that stops at the cut line can reveal an unwanted edge after trimming. Extend backgrounds to the template's outer bleed boundary and keep important content inside its safe regions.

Can I use the same cover for different paper stocks?

Check a new template for each selection. Even if the artwork is reusable, the spine and overall spread may change, requiring a revised export.

Where should I place important design elements?

Inside the appropriate safe regions shown on the current template. Front, back, spine and barcode areas need separate inspection; a single generic margin is not a complete check.

Why does my cover get rejected for wrong size?

Check the product choices, final page count, template scale and exported PDF dimensions. Our page-size tool helps compare geometry but cannot determine the platform's full reason for rejection.

How do I know the correct barcode size?

Follow the official barcode instructions and template for your cover, including any reserved area when KDP adds a barcode. Our tools do not verify barcode data or scannability.

What's the difference between matte and laminate for spine text?

Matte is a finish description, not the opposite of lamination. Compare the actual finish options and a physical proof; contrast, size and available spine width matter more than a generic font recipe.

What should I do if page count changes after cover design?
