Use the final production page count

Spine calculations must use the page count of the final interior PDF, including front matter, blank pages and intentionally unnumbered pages. A manuscript's word-processing count can differ after layout, chapter starts and image placement. Recalculate whenever pagination changes.

Some platforms restrict spine text below a minimum page count or spine width. Check those rules before placing typography close to the folds.

Paper thickness is specific to the printer and stock

Two papers with the same marketing weight can have different thicknesses because of fibre, coating and manufacturing. Use the printer's template generator or thickness-per-page value. Generic cream and white paper estimates are useful for planning but should never replace the production template.

Build the cover spread from fixed components

For a simple paperback, the horizontal trim span is back cover width + spine width + front cover width. Add the printer's bleed to the outside edges. The vertical size is cover height plus top and bottom bleed. Hinges, wraps and hardcover boards use a different construction and require the supplier's dieline.

Place the generated template in the design document at 100% scale. Lock it, design above it, and never stretch it to match an approximate canvas.

Keep spine content away from folds and variation

Perfect binding has manufacturing tolerances. Centre spine text optically and keep sufficient clearance from both fold lines. Avoid very small type and thin rules. Continue background artwork across the folds where appropriate so small shifts do not create visible white slivers.

• Use the exact printer and paper selection in the template generator.
• Keep the technical template unchanged at 100% scale.
• Export and inspect the full cover PDF, including bleed and spine position.
