Bleed amounts and safe areas, demystified
Compare 3 mm and 0.125 in bleed with exact conversions, A5 pixel calculations and a supplier-first checklist for safe margins.
0.125 in equals exactly 3.175 mm, not 3 mm. Use the bleed and inner safety margin specified for your product. A5 trim at 148 × 210 mm with 3 mm bleed gives 154 × 216 mm artwork: 1819 × 2552 px at 300 PPI when both pixel dimensions are rounded upward.

Bleed covers the outside; safety protects the inside
Trim is the intended finished edge. Bleed is artwork beyond that edge, available if the cut shifts outward. Safety is an inward offset for text, logos and other content you cannot afford to lose. A bleed allowance does not automatically establish the inner safety margin.
Extending a background reduces the risk of a white strip, but does not certify the final cut. A blank border, an image that stops at trim, or a shift beyond the available artwork can still produce an unwanted edge. Check the actual artwork as well as its dimensions.
Convert the requirement, not the assumption
The conversion is exact: 1 inch = 25.4 mm. Therefore 0.125 × 25.4 = 3.175 mm, while 3 ÷ 25.4 = 0.118110… inches. The difference is 0.175 mm per edge, or 0.35 mm across a whole dimension when the trim stays the same.
An imperial template may request 0.125 in and a metric template may request 3 mm. These are examples of job requirements, not universal regional rules. Do not choose bleed merely from a printer's country or assume a larger canvas will pass an automated upload check.
Measure safety from the trim line
Suppose a supplier requests 3 mm bleed and 4 mm inner safety. The critical-content boundary is 7 mm inward from the outer artwork edge: 3 mm to reach trim, then another 4 mm to reach safety.
Keep barcode quiet zones separate from cutting margins. Their requirements depend on the barcode type and size; an arbitrary 5 mm safety margin is not a substitute for the applicable barcode specification.
Some jobs deliberately have no bleed
A screen-only PDF has no physical trimming step. A printed page with a deliberate unprinted border may also need no edge-to-edge artwork. Confirm the finished appearance with the supplier instead of adding bleed automatically.
Adding a larger canvas cannot make a printer print beyond its hardware limits. Full-bleed work may require larger stock followed by trimming; shrinking to fit can change the finished dimensions.
A cover is more than an outer rectangle
Book covers can include spines, hinges and wrapping allowances. Interior pages may have different inner and outer requirements. Use the template for the actual binding, paper and page count.
For packaging, preserve the supplied dieline's scale and position. Cut, fold and glue areas need separate instructions. Enlarging a dieline to create bleed changes the product dimensions.
Correct numbers do not repair missing artwork
A larger page with an empty border is not usable bleed. Background artwork must reach the outer boundary. Crop marks are cutting instructions, not extra background pixels. A PDF box describes an area without proving that the area contains artwork.
Do not round 154 mm to 6.06 inches before converting to pixels. Keep the exact division by 25.4 until the final step; early rounding can leave the image short of the requested physical size.
A5 at 300 PPI: reproduce the calculation
Enter width 148, height 210, bleed 3 and PPI 300 in the Print Bleed Calculator, using millimetres. Artwork width is 148 + 2 × 3 = 154 mm; artwork height is 210 + 2 × 3 = 216 mm.
Width: 154 ÷ 25.4 × 300 = 1818.897637… pixels. Height: 216 ÷ 25.4 × 300 = 2551.181102… pixels. This tool rounds each dimension upward, giving 1819 × 2552 px. Nearest-integer rounding would give a different height; upward rounding avoids undershooting the requested raster canvas.
For vector layout, retain the exact 154 × 216 mm artwork size. Whole-pixel rounding is a raster constraint, not a reason to alter a vector template. The table uses the same explicit upward rounding rule.
Compare both allowances on the same trim
Keep A5 trim at 148 × 210 mm and change only the allowance. With 3.175 mm bleed the artwork is 154.35 × 216.35 mm. At 300 PPI, upward rounding gives 1824 × 2556 px, a different canvas from the 3 mm example.
For a 3.5 × 2 inch card with 0.125 inch bleed, the result is 3.75 × 2.25 inches, or exactly 1125 × 675 px at 300 PPI. For a 90 × 50 mm card with 3 mm bleed, it is 96 × 56 mm, or 1134 × 662 px after upward rounding.
Tolerance is a supplier input, not our guarantee
Cutting and registration tolerances vary with equipment, material and finishing. This calculator does not measure them. Ask which bleed, inner safety and border-width requirements apply; no generic allowance guarantees a white-edge-free result.
A thin decorative frame makes small shifts conspicuous even when no text is cut off. Discuss a wider border or alternative design with the supplier, and review a proof before ordering a large run.
Record the requirement before exporting
Save the product template with the job. Record trim size, bleed on each edge, inner safety and required marks. Resolve conflicting specifications before export rather than choosing the larger number.
Correction, September 12, 2026: fixed A5 pixel arithmetic, made upward rounding explicit and removed universal regional and cutting-tolerance claims. The numerical table now has regression checks against the calculator.

Frequently asked questions
Is 0.125 inch exactly 3 mm?
No. It is exactly 3.175 mm. Use the units and allowance in the supplier's template.
Will a larger bleed work with every printer?
No. An upload system can require exact dimensions, and different products need different templates. Confirm acceptance before changing the allowance.
Why is the A5 height 2552 pixels here?
216 ÷ 25.4 × 300 is 2551.181102… pixels. The tool rounds upward, not to the nearest integer, to avoid falling below the target size.
Does the calculator check that my background reaches the edge?
No. It calculates dimensions only. Inspect the source artwork and exported PDF separately.
