Field guide / eBook conversion

Convert EPUB to a printable PDF

Understand reflowable EPUB and fixed PDF layouts, convert authorized books privately, and choose page settings that produce a readable print copy.

QUICK ANSWER

An EPUB reflows its text to different screens, while a PDF fixes content onto pages. For a personal or authorized DRM-free EPUB, create a clean print layout, choose A4 or US Letter, then select Save as PDF in the browser print dialog. Expect complex publisher styling to change during conversion.

EPUB and PDF are designed for different jobs

EPUB reflows; PDF paginates

A reflowable EPUB is a package of XHTML, navigation, styles, images and metadata. Readers can change type size, margins and screen orientation, so a passage has no permanent page number. A PDF describes fixed pages, making it useful for printing, annotation against stable pagination and visual approval.

Conversion requires the flexible EPUB content to be laid out again for a chosen paper size. Line endings, page count, headings and image placement can differ from the e-reader version. That is expected rather than proof that the source EPUB is damaged.

Convert only books you are allowed to process

Use manuscripts you created, public-domain works, publisher proofs or other EPUB files for which you have conversion rights. Digital rights management can restrict copying and format conversion. File Preflight does not remove or bypass DRM and is not intended for protected commercial downloads.

The local workflow means the selected file is read on the device instead of sent to File Preflight. Copyright permission and local privacy solve different problems; private processing does not grant permission to reproduce a book.

Do not use a convenience conversion as the final publishing master

A personal reading PDF and a commercial print interior have different requirements. A production master may need exact trim, embedded fonts, bleed, color management, accessibility tagging and printer-specific page boxes. Return to the source manuscript or layout application when preparing a book for sale.

  • Validate the original EPUB in the intended reading applications.
  • Check every chapter start and special character in the PDF.
  • Keep source files and rights information with the converted copy.
  • Use the printer's template for a commercial interior or cover.
