EPUB reflows; PDF paginates

A reflowable EPUB is a package of XHTML, navigation, styles, images and metadata. Readers can change type size, margins and screen orientation, so a passage has no permanent page number. A PDF describes fixed pages, making it useful for printing, annotation against stable pagination and visual approval.

Conversion requires the flexible EPUB content to be laid out again for a chosen paper size. Line endings, page count, headings and image placement can differ from the e-reader version. That is expected rather than proof that the source EPUB is damaged.

EPUB 2 vs EPUB 3: Key differences for printing

EPUB 2 and EPUB 3 package reading content with metadata and a reading order. EPUB 3 also supports features such as richer media and fixed-layout publications. A version number alone does not predict conversion quality: document structure and the converter's supported features matter more.

It does not reproduce publisher CSS, embedded fonts, illustrations, rich tables or interactive content from either EPUB version. Why fixed-layout EPUBs are a different job

Fixed-layout EPUBs arrange content on fixed pages and are often used for comics, children's books and illustrated textbooks. Producing a faithful PDF requires a renderer that supports their layout, fonts and images. Similar-looking page concepts do not make the conversion automatically reliable.

Our text-oriented converter is not suitable for reproducing illustrated or fixed-layout books. It may omit essential visual content or report no readable chapters. Use a publisher-provided PDF or a compatible reading application's authorized export when visual fidelity is required.

Typography choices when printing a reflowed book

When converting a reflowable EPUB to PDF for printing, consider the final paper size and intended reader. For novels and general reading, a serif font like Times New Roman or Garamond at 10-12 points provides good readability. For technical documents, a sans-serif font like Arial or Helvetica at 9-11 points may be more appropriate. Line length should be 40-70 characters per line for optimal readability, with 1.5 or double spacing for draft copies.

Margins should accommodate binding and handling. A standard book might use 0.75-1 inch margins, while academic papers may require 1-1.25 inch margins for annotations. Page size selection depends on regional standards: A4 (210 × 297 mm) in most of the world, US Letter (8.5 × 11 inches) in North America, or custom sizes for special projects. Always test with a few pages before committing to a full print run.

Where public-domain books legitimately come from

Public-domain status depends on the work and the jurisdiction where you intend to use it. Project Gutenberg and national library collections can be useful starting points, but a book being freely accessible online does not by itself grant conversion or redistribution rights. Check the rights notice for the specific edition, illustrations and translation.

When working with public-domain material, verify the copyright status for your intended use and jurisdiction. Some works may be in the public domain in one country but still protected in another. Reputable sources clearly state copyright information and provide clean, well-structured EPUB files suitable for conversion. Be cautious of unofficial sites that may distribute modified or low-quality versions of public-domain works.

Personal use versus distribution rights

Convert only material you created, material whose license permits the intended use, or material you have otherwise established you may lawfully convert. Buying an eBook does not automatically grant every printing or redistribution right. Local processing does not change the terms attached to the content.

Even for personal use, respect the spirit of copyright by not circumventing DRM or other technological protection measures. When in doubt, consult legal advice or contact the copyright holder for clarification on permitted uses.

Ink and paper practicality for long books

Printing entire books can be expensive in terms of both ink/toner and paper. For long documents, consider printing only the sections you need, such as specific chapters or the table of contents. Alternatively, use a chapter splitter tool to break the PDF into manageable parts. This approach reduces waste and makes the printing process more practical for reference materials or study guides.

For very long books, professional printing services often offer better value and quality than home printing. Home printers may struggle with consistent color reproduction, paper weight handling, and binding. Consider whether the document requires professional finishing, such as perfect binding, saddle stitching, or cover lamination, which home setups cannot provide.

Choose simple print settings first

Use the paper standard available where the document will be read or printed: A4 in many regions and US Letter in the United States and Canada. The converter builds a readable single-column layout with print margins and page breaks between chapters. In the browser dialog, choose Save as PDF, verify paper size, and avoid enabling extra browser headers if you want a clean document.

Print or inspect a few representative pages before relying on the full result. Pay particular attention to poetry, tables, footnotes, right-to-left scripts, mathematical notation and image-heavy fixed-layout books because these require more specialized layout handling.

Do not use a convenience conversion as the final publishing master

A personal reading PDF and a commercial print interior have different requirements. A production master may need exact trim, embedded fonts, bleed, color management, accessibility tagging and printer-specific page boxes. Return to the source manuscript or layout application when preparing a book for sale.

• Validate the original EPUB in the intended reading applications.
• Check every chapter start and special character in the PDF.
• Keep source files and rights information with the converted copy.
• Use the printer's template for a commercial interior or cover.

A worked printing session, start to finish

Suppose a 380-page public-domain novel needs printing for personal reading, but the whole book is too thick for a home printer in one pass. Open the EPUB in the converter, choose A4, and confirm the chapter count before printing anything. Then export only chapters one to five: in the Split and Extract tool, enter the page range that covers those chapters in the print-ready document, and print the extracted copy rather than the full book.

The result is a manageable stapled booklet instead of a jam-prone brick. Repeat for the next chapters when ready. Check one thing at each boundary: the final sentence of chapter five and the opening line of chapter six, so a page-range typo cannot silently skip content.

Binding choices for home-printed books

Duplex printing with long-edge binding is the default for reading copies and halves the paper stack immediately. For binding, stapling suits documents up to about twenty sheets; beyond that, binder clips, spiral binding at a copy shop, or a sewn binding for a durable volume each have their place. A copy shop can also trim the rough edge that home duplex printing leaves.

Paper choice matters more than expected: 80 GSM paper through a home printer keeps thin chapters flexible, while heavy 120 GSM stock turns a 200-page print into an unwieldy block. Print a ten-page sample of the chosen paper and binding before committing the whole book.

Print settings and what each one changes

The three settings that shape a printed reflowed book are page size, type size and margins, and each has a visible consequence. Page size fixes the line length the reader's eye tracks: A4 lines run long for a novel, and US Letter slightly wider still; the book prints fine either way, but a 6 x 9-like comfort is simply not what a reflow tool offers. Type size trades page count against readability: smaller type packs more per sheet, larger type tires less over a long evening.

Printable margins vary by printer and driver; there is no universal 10 mm hardware allowance. This converter starts with 20 mm page margins. Inspect the browser preview and test representative chapter openings and long paragraphs before printing a whole book. The generated layout is text-oriented, so missing EPUB illustrations are a limitation, not a margin-setting issue.
